Watermelon Lemonade: A Secret Ingredient for Unearthing Childhood Summers

March 31, 2025

Weird thing about this lemonade—just the smell of it takes me back in a totally unexpected way. Not the citrus punch I’d expect, but the faint, sweet watery scent of watermelon with a hint of grassiness—like, I don’t know, summer vacations in grandma’s backyard, running barefoot through the grass. Makes me wonder why I don’t just keep a jar of this in my fridge year-round. It’s not just a drink, it’s i guess a tiny time machine that also happens to be ridiculously thirst-quenching. No fancy ingredients, just ripe watermelon, fresh lemons, a pinch of salt, and a little sprig of mint if you’re feeling fancy. Kinda like summer’s best-kept secret, made into a glass. Maybe because I needed something refreshingly simple that cuts through the haze of too much caffeine and too little sunlight lately.

Watermelon Lemonade

This watermelon lemonade is a refreshing, semi-opaque beverage with a pale pink hue, made by blending ripe watermelon with fresh lemon juice, a pinch of salt, and mint. The final drink has a slightly watery, sweet flavor with hints of citrus and grassiness, served chilled and typically with ice, offering a smooth, thirst-quenching texture.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups ripe watermelon chunks seedless preferred
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice about 2-3 lemons
  • 1 pinch salt to enhance flavor
  • 4 fresh sprigs mint optional, for garnish
  • to taste ice cubes for serving

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Pitcher

Method

  1. Measure and chop the watermelon into roughly 1-inch chunks, removing any seeds. Place the chunks into the blender.
  2. Add fresh lemon juice and a pinch of salt to the blender. Secure the lid and blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth and slightly frothy, about 30-45 seconds.
  3. Place a fine mesh strainer over a large pitcher. Pour the blended mixture through the strainer to remove pulp and achieve a smooth, slightly watery liquid. Use a spoon to press the liquid through if necessary.
  4. Stir the strained lemonade well. Taste and adjust the sweetness or acidity if desired by adding more lemon juice or a touch of honey or sugar. Chill the mixture in the fridge for at least 10 minutes.
  5. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the chilled watermelon lemonade over the ice, garnish with a sprig of mint, and serve immediately.

Sometimes I pour it over ice, sometimes I don’t. Either way, it always seems to remind me we’re allowed to crave comfort in the smallest ways. This might not change your life, but damn, it’ll make your afternoon a little brighter. Or so I keep hoping, at least.
