Ingredients

  • 4 cups water filtered or spring water preferred
  • 4 whole cloves preferably fresh or whole dried cloves
  • 1 apple sliced thinly (tart or sweet varieties work)
  • 1 orange thinly sliced or peeled into strips
  • 1 cinnamon stick whole for easy removal
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract optional, for added warmth

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan or pot
  • Wooden spoon or ladle
  • Strainer (optional)
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water, cloves, apple slices, orange slices, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf.
  2. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for 20–30 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.
  4. If desired, add vanilla extract during the last few minutes of simmering for added warmth.
  5. Strain out the solids or serve as is, depending on preference.
  6. Serve hot in mugs, garnished with extra apple or orange slices if desired.

Notes

Adjust the spice quantities to your preference; for a sweeter profile, add honey or maple syrup after simmering. For a more intense flavor, let it steep longer before removing the spices.
