Ingredients

  • 4 cups water enough to fill the pot
  • 2 cinnamon sticks cinnamon sticks optional for warmth and fragrance
  • 4 whole cloves whole cloves adds spice aroma
  • 1 orange orange slices preferably organic, sliced thinly
  • 1 lemon lemon slices adds brightness and freshness
  • 3 sprigs fresh rosemary adds herbal depth
  • 2 star anise star anise for a sweet-spicy aroma

Equipment

  • Small saucepan or pot
  • Ladle or slotted spoon

Method

  1. Pour the water into a small saucepan and place it on the stove over medium heat.
  2. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, and fresh rosemary to the water.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, listening for soft bubbling without vigorous boiling.
  4. As the water warms, layer in the thin slices of orange and lemon, watching their bright colors sink lightly into the water.
  5. Let the mixture simmer on low, allowing the herbs and spices to release their essential oils and fragrant aromas.
  6. Occasionally, gently lift the citrus slices and herbs with a ladle to check their appearance and scent strength.
  7. If the water level drops below a certain point, carefully add more hot water to maintain the level and continue simmering.
  8. Adjust the heat to keep the water at a gentle simmer—this ensures a steady release of fragrance without burning the ingredients.
  9. Remove the citrus slices and herbs after about 30 minutes, or as desired, to control the intensity of the scent.
  10. Enjoy the warm, cozy aroma filling your home as you relax or entertain; the visual of floating herbs and citrus makes it even more inviting.
  11. Turn off the stove and let the mixture cool completely before discarding the ingredients or storing leftovers in a sealed container if desired.

Notes

Feel free to customize with your favorite fall herbs or adjust the spice quantities for a stronger or milder scent. Always monitor the water level during simmering to prevent burning and ensure a continuous release of fragrances.
