Ingredients

  • 1 large apple preferably a tart variety like Granny Smith
  • 2 cinnamon sticks cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange orange for citrus peels, prefer organic
  • 4 cloves whole cloves optional, for extra spiced aroma
  • 4 cups water enough to cover ingredients in the pot

Equipment

  • Saucepan or small pot
  • Knife
  • Chopping board

Method

  1. Core and thinly slice the apple into rings or half-moons, revealing its crisp interior.
  2. Use a peeler or knife to remove the orange zest in wide strips, avoiding the pith; then, cut the zest into smaller pieces.
  3. Pour water into a saucepan or small pot and place it over medium heat, bringing it just to a gentle simmer.
  4. Add the apple slices, citrus zest, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves to the hot water. Arrange them so they’re mostly submerged but visible above the water line.
  5. Let the mixture simmer gently, not boil, allowing the fragrant aromas to be released. Keep an eye on the water level and add more if it evaporates too quickly.
  6. Smell the rich, spicy scent as the ingredients release their autumnal aroma, and watch as the fruit and spices bob in the water, creating an inviting display.
  7. If needed, add a splash of extra water to keep the ingredients submerged and prevent burning or drying out.
  8. After about 20 to 30 minutes, turn off the heat and carefully transfer the aromatic mixture to a serving bowl or simply enjoy right from the pot to fill your space with cozy fall scents.
  9. Optionally, replenish the scent by adding fresh citrus peels or spices and simmering again to refresh the aroma throughout the day.
  10. Enjoy the warm, spicy, fruity fragrance that fills your home, creating an inviting autumn atmosphere.

Notes

Ensure not to let the water fully evaporate during simmering to prevent burning. Use organic citrus for better scent and to avoid pesticides. Feel free to customize with other spices like star anise or bay leaves for added complexity.
