Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh cranberries rinsed and sorted
  • 2 cans water enough to cover cranberries
  • 2 sticks cinnamon sticks preferably whole
  • 1 zest orange zest from one orange, grated finely
  • 1 piece citrus slice orange or lemon for added citrus aroma
  • optional herbs or cloves fresh rosemary sprig or whole cloves for extra fragrance

Equipment

  • Large saucepan or pot
  • Ladle

Method

  1. Add the rinsed cranberries to a large saucepan and pour in enough water to just cover them.
  2. Drop in the cinnamon sticks and stir gently to distribute them among the cranberries.
  3. Add the orange zest and place a slice of citrus on top for a pop of brightness and aroma.
  4. If desired, toss in a sprig of rosemary or a few whole cloves for an extra layer of fragrance.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, listening for the bubbling sound and watching the cranberries start to soften and release color.
  6. Lower the heat and let it simmer gently for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the aroma to fill the room and the cranberries to burst softly.
  7. Adjust the water level as needed to maintain a gentle simmer, adding more hot water if the mixture begins to reduce too much.
  8. Once the aroma is fragrant and the cranberries are plump and bursting, turn off the heat and carefully ladle the mixture into a bowl or directly leave it in the pot for ongoing aroma.
  9. Enjoy the fragrant steam that fills your space, creating a cozy, autumnal atmosphere.

Notes

Feel free to customize with additional spices like cloves or a splash of orange juice for a more citrusy scent. Keep an eye on the water level to prevent burning and replenish as needed during simmering.
