  • Fresh cranberries 1 cup: Provides a tart, festive base for the potpourri.
  • Water 2 cans: Helps create the simmering liquid and release the fragrance.
  • Cinnamon sticks 2 sticks: Adds a warm, spicy aroma that’s essential to the fall scent.
  • Orange zest 1 zest: Gives a bright, citrusy note to balance the spices.
  • Citrus slice 1 orange or lemon: Adds extra citrus aroma to the simmering pot.
  • Optional herbs or cloves fresh rosemary sprig or whole cloves: Enhances the fragrance with additional depth.

Equipment

  • Small saucepan or pot
  • Grater (for zesting the orange)
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Knife (for slicing the citrus)
  • Measuring cups

Method

  1. Place the fresh cranberries in a small saucepan.
  2. Add enough water to create a liquid base for simmering (about 2 cups)
  3. Toss in the cinnamon sticks and orange zest.
  4. Slice the citrus into rounds and add it to the pot.
  5. Optionally, add fresh rosemary sprigs or whole cloves to enhance the fragrance and depth of the fall aroma
  6. Stir everything together to mix the ingredients.
  7. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  8. Once the mixture begins to simmer, reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  9. Let the potpourri simmer for 1-2 hours, adding more water as needed.
  10. Stir occasionally to release the fragrance.
  11. Once the aroma fills the air, enjoy the cozy ambiance.
  12. Keep the simmering pot on the stove or warm it up throughout the day.

Notes

Feel free to customize with additional spices like cloves or a splash of orange juice for a more citrusy scent. Keep an eye on the water level to prevent burning and replenish as needed during simmering.
