Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with a little butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
- Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl and scatter the sliced apples evenly over the top.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and brown sugar until well combined and the mixture is slightly frothy.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apple layers, pressing down gently so the bread absorbs the liquid and becomes moist.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the casserole, allowing it to seep into the layers for added richness.
- Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for about 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set around the edges.
- Remove the bake from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. The dish will puff up slightly and sound hollow when tapped in the center.
- Slice into squares and serve warm, optionally garnished with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or syrup for added sweetness.
Notes
For best results, use slightly stale bread to absorb more custard. You can prepare this the night before and refrigerate overnight for an even more flavorful bake.
